Silver and Golden Anniversary Gifts: Marking 25 and 50 Years

Round wooden family plaque engraved for a silver anniversary

Silver is the traditional twenty-fifth anniversary gift and gold is the fiftieth. Both the UK list that South Africa follows and the American list agree, so there is no confusion at either milestone. These are the two anniversaries where the material has genuinely entered the language: people say silver wedding and golden wedding without needing to explain.

There is something specific about these two milestones that changes how you should shop. At twenty-five and especially at fifty, the couple is frequently not the one buying. Adult children, grandchildren, family friends and colleagues organise these gifts, often as a group, and often for people who have spent decades acquiring everything they need.

This guide covers what each milestone traditionally is, what to give when the couple already has everything, how to organise a group gift, what to engrave, and what to spend. The full anniversary gifts by year list covers the years in between.

Silver at 25, gold at 50

Milestone Traditional material Also known as
25 years Silver Silver wedding
50 years Gold Golden wedding

Both are identical on the UK traditional list used in South Africa and on the American list. Neither has a competing modern-list alternative worth worrying about, which is unusual: silver and gold are so firmly established that the modern list left them alone.

For completeness, the milestones on either side: twenty is china, thirty is pearl, forty is ruby, and sixty is diamond. Those come up when you are buying for a couple who are close to but not exactly at twenty-five or fifty.

Silver at 25 and gold at 50 are uncontested on both lists. These are the two anniversaries where the material is part of the name of the occasion.

Why these two are different from every other anniversary

Three things change at a silver or golden anniversary, and each one changes the gift.

The couple is usually not buying. At five or ten years, the partners buy for each other. At twenty-five and fifty, there is often a party, and the gifts come from children, grandchildren, siblings and long-standing friends. That means the gift needs to work as something given rather than something exchanged.

They already own everything. A couple married fifty years has been accumulating household objects since the 1970s. The category of "useful thing they do not have" is essentially empty.

The occasion is public. Silver and golden anniversaries are celebrated with a gathering far more often than a twelfth is. The gift may well be opened in front of people, and it may end up as part of the display.

Put those three together and the answer becomes fairly clear. The gift should be commemorative rather than practical, it should carry names and dates rather than being merely nice, and it should be presentable.

Three adult children organising their parents' golden wedding spend weeks looking for something their parents do not already own, before realising the category does not exist. They order an engraved plaque carrying both parents' names, the wedding date and the year, with all seven grandchildren listed underneath. It goes up in the lounge that afternoon.

Gifts for a silver wedding anniversary

Twenty-five years usually means a couple in their fifties or sixties with a settled home and, frequently, adult children.

The round family plaque. A round family plaque from R430 carrying the surname and both years, 2001 to 2026. This is the workhorse of milestone anniversary gifting and the piece most often chosen.

The welcome board. A personalised wooden welcome board from R1,099 is the statement option, and at twenty-five years the scale is warranted.

The initials clock. A personalised initials clock from R399, carrying the shared initial. Marking twenty-five years with an object that measures time is a reasonable piece of symbolism.

The cork saver box. A personalised wooden cork saver box at R1,499 for a couple who enjoy wine. It starts empty and fills over the years that follow, which suits a milestone that is about continuing rather than concluding.

The cutting board. A custom wooden cutting board at R599 engraved with the surname and the two years.

The photo plaque. A minimalist wooden photo plaque at R349 with the wedding photograph, twenty-five years on. Simple and reliably effective.

Gifts for a golden wedding anniversary

Fifty years shifts the emphasis again. The couple is typically in their seventies or eighties, may be downsizing rather than accumulating, and the gathering is often multi-generational.

The rule that works at fifty: give them the family, not another object.

The family plaque with grandchildren's names. A round family plaque from R430 carrying the couple's names, the two years, and the names of children and grandchildren underneath. This is the single most-given golden anniversary gift and the one that consistently lands.

Mom's Garden plaque. The Mom's Garden wooden plaque at R499 lists children's names as flowers. It reads as a mother's or grandmother's piece rather than a couple's, so it suits a gift specifically for her.

The "Reasons We Love You" frame. The "Reasons We Love You" frame at R329 gives words rather than an object, which is often exactly right for someone who is trying to own less.

The photo frame. A personalised wooden photo frame at R299 with the wedding photograph. At fifty years, that photograph is a genuine artefact.

The keepsake box. A rainbow keepsake box from R799 for fifty years of accumulated cards, letters and photographs, which most couples of that generation have in a box already, just not a nice one.

The personalised puzzle. A personalised puzzle from R799 made from the wedding photograph. It turns the gift into a shared activity at the gathering itself.

At fifty years, a gift carrying the names of children and grandchildren outperforms anything bought for the couple themselves. They have enough objects and not enough records.

Buying as a group: children, grandchildren and friends

Most silver and golden anniversary gifts are organised by somebody rather than simply bought, and the organising is where it goes wrong.

Here is the version that works:

  1. Start six weeks out. A made-to-order engraved piece takes 5 to 7 working days to produce, and collecting money from a family takes considerably longer than that.
  2. Agree the piece first, then collect. People contribute more readily to something specific than to a vague pot.
  3. Set the per-person amount low and let numbers do the work. Eight people at R150 is R1,200, which buys a substantial piece and clears free shipping.
  4. Collect every name in writing. This is the step that matters most. A plaque listing eleven grandchildren needs eleven correct spellings, and verbal lists produce mistakes.
  5. Confirm the wedding date with someone who actually knows it. Do not rely on memory. Ask a sibling, or check the certificate.
  6. Order once, then stop discussing it. Engraving cannot be amended once production begins.

A family group of nine organising a silver anniversary gift collects R120 each and orders one engraved plaque. Two grandchildren's names are spelled from memory in the group chat and one is wrong. The plaque is permanent. The lesson is to type the list out and have a parent check it.

Collect the names in writing, not in a group chat. Engraving is permanent and a misspelled grandchild is not a fixable problem.

When the couple already has everything

This is the defining constraint at both milestones, and it is worth being systematic about it.

Things they almost certainly have: crockery, glassware, kitchen equipment, ornaments, picture frames, candles, blankets, garden tools.

Things they almost certainly do not have: a single object listing every member of the family by name, a record of the wedding date in a form other than a certificate in a drawer, and a decent box for the things they have kept.

That gap is the whole answer. The category that survives "they have everything" is the category of things that could not have been bought for anyone else.

A second option worth naming honestly: an experience or a contribution towards one. If the couple genuinely wants less rather than more, a family gathering, a meal, or a trip is a legitimate gift and no engraved keepsake competes with it. Where a keepsake earns its place is as the thing that outlasts the day, which is why plenty of families do both.

What to engrave for 25 or 50 years

At these milestones the number belongs on the piece. Unlike a first anniversary, nobody is going to find "Fifty Years" embarrassing in a decade.

Names, both years and the count. "Johan & Elsa, 1976 to 2026, Fifty Years". Complete, and it needs no explanation to anyone reading it later.

The occasion by name. "Golden Wedding, 1976 to 2026" or "Silver Wedding, 2001 to 2026". Formal, and it suits a larger piece.

Names of the whole family. The couple at the top, children next, grandchildren underneath. This is the highest-value engraving available at fifty years and it justifies a larger piece to fit it.

The date in full. "Married 14 November 1976". Specific and dignified.

A short line. Under eight words. "Still going" has been used to great effect. Anything longer shrinks the lettering.

Check the wedding date and every name spelling before ordering. At a fiftieth in particular, the people who would notice an error are all going to be in the room.

Budget bands in Rands

Band Suits Pieces
Under R350 An individual guest, or a grandchild contributing Coasters from R119, name plaque from R175, photo frame R299, "Reasons We Love You" frame R329
R350 to R600 A single significant gift from one family Photo plaque R349, initials clock from R399, round family plaque from R430, Mom's Garden plaque R499, cutting board R599
R600 to R1,000 A pooled gift from several people Keepsake box from R799, puzzle from R799
Over R1,000 The family gift for a milestone Welcome board from R1,099, cork saver box R1,499

Free shipping applies over R1,000, which a group gift will almost always clear.

At these milestones a group gift is usually better than several individual ones. Nine separate gifts to a couple who already have everything creates a storage problem. One substantial engraved piece does not.

Ordering and delivery

Everything is engraved and made to order in Cape Town. Nothing is held in stock.

Production takes 5 to 7 working days, plus courier transit. Delivery is nationwide across South Africa, with free shipping on orders over R1,000.

Order six weeks ahead for a group gift. The production time is short; the family coordination is not. Six weeks gives room to agree the piece, collect contributions, gather every name in writing and have someone senior check the list before anything is cut.

For a single gift from one person, two weeks is enough.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 25th wedding anniversary gift?

Silver. It is the traditional material on both the UK list that South Africa follows and the American list, which is why a twenty-fifth is called a silver wedding. There is no competing modern-list alternative.

What is the 50th wedding anniversary gift?

Gold, which is why a fiftieth is known as a golden wedding. Like silver at twenty-five, it is identical across both traditional lists and is firmly enough established that the modern list did not replace it.

What do you give a couple who has everything for their anniversary?

Something that could not have been bought for anyone else. A couple married twenty-five or fifty years owns every practical object they need, but almost none of them own a single piece listing every family member by name, or a permanent record of the wedding date. That gap is the gift.

What is a good 50th wedding anniversary gift from children and grandchildren?

An engraved plaque carrying the couple's names, the wedding date and both years, with children and grandchildren listed underneath. It is the most-given golden anniversary gift because it solves the "they have everything" problem directly. Collect every name in writing first.

How do we organise a group anniversary gift?

Start six weeks ahead. Agree the piece before collecting money, set a low per-person amount, gather every name in writing rather than verbally, confirm the wedding date with someone who knows it, then order once. Eight people at R150 buys a substantial engraved piece and clears free shipping.

What should be engraved on a silver or golden anniversary gift?

The names, both years and the count: "Johan & Elsa, 1976 to 2026, Fifty Years". At these milestones the number belongs on the piece. For a fiftieth, adding the names of children and grandchildren is the strongest option available.

What is the 20th, 30th and 40th anniversary?

China at twenty, pearl at thirty and ruby at forty on the traditional list. Diamond is sixty. These come up when buying for a couple who are near but not exactly at a silver or golden milestone.

How much should we spend on a 25th or 50th anniversary gift?

For an individual guest, R120 to R350. For a family group gift, R600 to R1,500 is typical and buys a substantial engraved piece. At these milestones one pooled gift usually works better than several individual ones, since the couple has limited room for more objects.

How far ahead should we order?

Six weeks for a group gift, two weeks for an individual one. Production takes only 5 to 7 working days, but collecting money and correct name spellings from a family takes considerably longer than production does.

Do you deliver anniversary gifts across South Africa?

Yes. Everything is made to order in Cape Town and couriered nationwide, with free shipping on orders over R1,000.

Mark it properly

Silver and golden anniversaries are the two the whole family turns up for, and they are the two where the usual gifting logic breaks down, because the couple stopped needing things some time ago.

Give them the record instead. Names, dates, and the people who exist because of the marriage being celebrated. Nobody puts that in a cupboard.

Three decisions. Pool the gift rather than buying separately. Get every name and the wedding date in writing before ordering. Start six weeks out, because the family is slower than the workshop.
